Why Daily Activity is so Vital to Weight Loss
Weight loss is a real struggle for so many individuals, mainly because of the required mental fortitude it takes to shed some pounds. What do I mean by that? Well, weight loss in itself is an easy goal when you look at it outwardly, it is as simple as: Eat less calories than you are burning in a given day. However, when you take into account the typical human tendency to want what they can't have or eat what they shouldn't eat, it throws this natural process out the window. However, what if I told you there was a way to eat more every single day while losing weight?
No, this is not a joke, but it will take work on your part to be able to consume more calories. The truth is this: The more daily activity that you perform on a given day, the more that you can eat on a given day. Unfortunately, so many people in the world today forget this fairly self explanatory point. People think that as long as they make it to the gym for a 45 minute or hour long workout, they can simply throw in the towel and sit on the couch for the rest of the day. Remember, getting to the gym and working out during the day is one of the biggest hurdles that you can climb in your fitness and health journey! Don't ever forget that. However, lets take a look at your activity throughout the rest of your day.
So lets say you get to the gym, and perform an hour long strength training workout. This workout is sweaty, it's hard, you're just counting the seconds for it to be over. Finally, at the end of your workout, you feel empowered and fulfilled. Good job! You've gotten further ahead today than most of the other billions of people in the world. How many calories have you burned in this workout? Studies show that on average a 150 pound person will burn anywhere between 200-400 calories in a given workout. If you burned 400 calories in that hour, you were pushing yourself harder than you have ever pushed yourself... It was a true high intensity lifting session.
So you've done it! You've worked out for the day! Yes, that is really commendable... But lets take a look at how daily activity outside of your workout affects your calories burned throughout the day. Lets say that in the morning before the gym, you take a quick 15 min walk and on average take about 2,000 steps. Let's say that before your workout to warm up, you walk on the treadmill for another 15 min. Then later after your workout is complete, instead of going home and rushing to throw the TV on, you decide to take the little pup for a walk and are gone for an hour. So lets say, just in those three instances of physical activity, you walk over 10,000 steps in your day. How many calories have you burned outside of your workout?
According to studies, if you walk a total of 10,000 steps in a given day, you are burning anywhere between 400-500 extra calories! Just stop and think about that for a second. During your intense hour long workout, where you are sweating, dying and out of breath, you will burn at the most around 400 calories. Now, even if you just take a couple of easy brisk walks, you'll burn more calories throughout the day than during your workout. Wow! It's really crazy when you stop and think about it.
Am I saying that you should skip the gym and just walk more throughout your day? Absolutely not. Weight and strength training has so many other added benefits than simply burning calories, and it is so important to have a daily routine that includes some kind of resistance training. However, it does put the activity that you perform on a daily basis on a pedestal. The beauty of it too is that you really don't have to make a super conscious effort to go on a ton of walks throughout the day. The research shows that if you take one 30 min walk per day, mixed with your regular activity throughout the day, you will be able to hit a total of 10,000 steps a day. You can check yourself on this as well, if you have an iPhone, enter the health app and as long as you carry your phone around with you in your pocket when you are moving around, it will give you a rough estimate on how many steps you have taken in a given day. This is a great starting point to check yourself everyday and see if you have to improve your daily activity throughout your day.
So in the end, is it really that difficult to add a little activity to your busy day? Hopefully after looking at the facts in this article, you will see the importance to staying active throughout your day. Try to make for yourself a good routine that includes an easy 30 min walk during your day. This could potentially be the key to jumpstart your weight loss journey!
