1st Phorm Vegan Power Pro Protein Review
This one here is to cater to all of you vegans out there, or those of you who get some severe belly aches from too much whey protein. 1st Phorm is a somewhat well established supplement company that is supported and branded by many social media influencers. I had heard good things about their protein powders and curiosity drove me to try them out for myself. I had heard they use high quality ingredients and take pride in their supplements and how they are made. I decided to take a different route than indulge in my normal whey protein isolate, and try out their Vegan Power Pro protein powder. I know you're waiting on the edge of your seat to find out what I thought, so here we go!
Taste 4/10 Iced Oatmeal Cookie -
One of the reasons that I am always hesitant to buy a vegan protein powder is due to the taste. I am not at all a big fan of that chalky, gross, gritty texture in almost all vegan protein powders. This was absolute not an exception to that assumption. This protein powder is so gritty and chunky, it makes it hard to drink. Now, this easily could have been the flavor that I had picked as well. I always notice that for some reason, a vegan protein powder with a chocolate base always tastes better to me; I feel like the chalkiness almost goes better with a chocolatey flavor. This Iced Oatmeal Cookie flavor of 1st Phorms Vegan Power Pro was not at all sweet, and it was at times so chunky that I could barely stomach the texture. Don't get me wrong, it could have been way worse. I noticed that the best way to enjoy this protein was with sweetened almond milk, which made it somewhat palatable.
Nutrition 6/10 -
As far as the nutrition and the macronutrients found in this protein powder, they could definitely be better but they also could be much much worse. One thing that is really tough is the fact that there are only 19 grams of protein in a single serving. One of the biggest struggles of a vegan diet is getting enough protein into your system on a given day, so in my opinion there should be at least 20-22 grams of protein per serving if not more to supplement that need into your diet with ease. The good thing about this protein powder is that it is only 100 calories, which is fantastic for dieting down and not having to burden yourself with a high calorie protein shake. As for carbohydrates and fat grams, there are only 3 grams of carbs and 2 grams of fat; extremely low per serving. Overall, this is a very average protein powder when you look at the raw macronutrient profile.
Ingredients 10/10 -
Listen, isn't this really what we are all here for? Who the heck cares about the taste or the macronutrients when you look at the ingredient profile of this protein powder. I am all in when it comes to making sure you are not only paying attention to the calories you put into your body, but also the quality of calories you are eating as well. It does not get better than this protein powder when you look at quality ingredients. Found in this ingredient profile you will find a superfood blend that contains oat grass, spinach, broccoli, carrots, sweet potato, orange, apple, strawberry, sunflower seed, shitake mushroom, and the list goes on and on. So many natural ingredients and a great source of vitamins and minerals from all of those different superfoods!
There is also a VitaBerry fruit blend which contains grapes, wild blueberries, raspberries, cranberries and so on. Another great source of proper vitamins to keep your body energized and operating properly. If you look at the vitamin profile as well, you can see that in this shake are many valuable vitamins that are only there to help you get better. Great job 1st Phorm!
Mixability 4/10 -
I'm not going to sugarcoat this at all, but this protein SUCKS at mixing with anything. If you want Vegan Power Pro to mix well with anything at all, you better make sure you add more water or milk than the 12 recommended ounces. Also, make sure that you immediately mix this protein right when you add it to your preferred beverage. If you do not do this, you will end up with these disgusting moist chunks of solidified powder that you'll be sucking down while you chug this shake.
Value 8/10 -
So here is the thing... I want to give this a poor review when it comes to the value of this protein powder due to where its lacking when it comes to flavor and mixability, but unfortunately I can't. Is this protein powder expensive? Yes, it is. Does it taste kind of bad and does it get a little chunky? Sure. But, when you sit down and look at the ingredients that go into creating this protein powder, I think you will understand why I am giving it an 8/10 when it comes to its value. For a 30 serving tub of this protein, retail on the website is $49.99. It ends up coming out to a little under $2 per serving, which is certainly a little on the pricey side. But in my opinion, its worth it for all that your getting in the ingredients.
I know I probably didn't sell you at all on this protein, and you are probably thinking to yourself, "I would rather stab myself in the face than try this horribly rated protein." But the truth is this: if you care more about high quality ingredients and less about taste and mixability, this may be your go-to protein. You should definitely at least give it a try, you may not find the taste to be as dissatisfying as I did.
